The UAE has not abandoned plans for a direct passenger rail link between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, a senior official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said, as Dubai prepares to host a major global public transport forum. Plans had not been derailed in favour of a network used purely for freight.
Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi welcomed its first commercial container ship yesterday, the largest ever to dock in the emirate's waters. Dynamic Evergreen, a Taiwanese-owned 294-metre vessel, sailed into the new port at 8am. Giant cranes, the largest ship-to-shore cranes in the world, then unloaded the containers, crammed with everything from food to electrical spare parts.
Emirati specialists are needed to help make better roads that will save lives as the country's network grows, a leading academic says. "Roads are the spine of life and society, and we encourage many Emiratis to be a part of this project," said Dr Tayeb Al Kamali, the vice chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT).
