Shaikh Khalifa Excellence Award, or SKEA, the biggest business award given to companies in Abu Dhabi for their management and excellence, was presented to 11 companies here on Monday.
Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative for Western Region, at a ceremony attended by the corporate elite from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and other emirate awarded the winning companies. The ceremony was attended by Shaikhs, top government officials, and diplomats. The SKEA for 2010-11 were won by the companies run by the public sector. However, the private sector won awards in silver category.
The awards are given annually by Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry to encourage corporate excellence and boost customer service, as the capital aims at diversifying its oil-driven economy into Knowledge-based economy by 2030.
Mafraq Hospital clinched the ‘Diamond Award’ along with Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd, or GASCO, ranked the best companies in the emirate according to a panel of assessors.
Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, or ADDC, which is a distribution wing of ADWEA won the award in the gold category. Others, who won the award for excellence included Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company, or ADMA-OPCO, Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, or SEHA, and Commercial Bank of Dubai.
Five awards were given in the silver category to the companies including Unibeton Ready Mix, a unit of Al Farra Group of Dr J.R.Gangaramani, Excellent Pipes Company, Abu Dhabi University, Al Mansoori Specialised Engineering and Life Line Hospital, a unit of Abu Dhabi’s EMKE Group.
Certificate of appreciation were given to seven companies including Al Hilal Bank, Gulf Diagnostic Hospital, Al Ansari Exchange. Others included Fast rent A Car, Aloft Abu Dhabi Hotel, Joseph Advertising, Al Ghadeer Pure Water.
The assessors judge the companies for their leadership, policy & strategy, people, partnerships and resources, processes, while 50 per cent weightage is given to customers and key performance results. Shaikh Khalifa Excellence Award has been designed to recognise the achievement of organisations that demonstrate high performance and a journey of continuous improvement.
“Organisations are beginning to realise that in order to prosper they must pay greater attention to the quality of their product and the excellence of their service. In fact many organisations are now discovering that this search for excellence has become their way to achieve sustained competitive advantage,” an organiser said.
He said that organisations that participate in the award will discover that Business Excellence is a much broader concept than instigation any of the popular quality management initiatives.
Dr V.P Shamsher, Managing Director of Life Line Hospital, said that his hospital has achieved this award second time consecutively, as four year old hospital group has made a name in providing excellent healthcare facilities in the city centre.
