The Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi has won the first international PTx2 Award – an awards initiative that supports the objective of doubling the worldwide public transport market share – at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) World Congress and Exhibition which concluded in Dubai last week.
DoT was honoured with the PTx2 Daring Ambition Award worldwide at the prestigious Congress and Exhibition in recognition of its efforts to develop a world-class and sustainable public transport infrastructure in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
The UITP PTx2 Awards recognize DoT’s Abu Dhabi Public Transport Program Initiative, which aims to trigger a massive shift to public transport in Abu Dhabi City. The public transport mode share in Abu Dhabi City, which was less than 1% in 2007, has increased to 4.2 percent by mid 2010, and is targeted to reach 33 percent by 2030.
The Abu Dhabi Public Transport Program Initiative includes a number of major projects and studies such as the Metro, LRT/Tram, Water Transport, Regional Rail, Policy and Regulation, Road Pricing, and Bus Lane studies to name a few. Implementation of such projects and studies would contribute to PTx2 strategic goals and DoT’s ambition to grow the public transport market share. In 2009, DoT created the ambitious Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP) to deliver a World Class Transport System for Abu Dhabi.
